Your data
Delete your account and data
The short version
You can delete your FlagRisk account, and the personal data we hold about you, at any time. The fastest way is in the app. If you cannot use the app, use the request form on this page, and we confirm that it is you before we act.
1.How to delete your account
In the FlagRisk app, open Settings, then Account, then Delete account. We ask you to confirm, and then we delete your account straight away. This cannot be undone.
If you cannot use the app, fill in the request form on this page. It reaches our data protection team directly, and we work it as a formal deletion request.
Before we delete anything, we confirm that it is you. We send a one time code to the mobile number on the account. We do this so that nobody else can delete your account, and with it your trusted circle and your safety history. We do not act on a request that we cannot confirm.
If you use FlagRisk only on WhatsApp, your WhatsApp number and your account are the same account. Use the request form on this page, with that WhatsApp number as your mobile number. To stop alerts without deleting your account, send STOP ALERTS to the FlagRisk account on WhatsApp.
We reply to every request within one month, and we tell you if a request is complex and needs longer. Closing the account stops FlagRisk alerts, including alerts on WhatsApp, and removes you from any trusted circle you belong to.
Request account deletion
Use this form to ask us to delete your FlagRisk account and your personal data. We confirm that it is you before we act, so give the mobile number on your account.
Request received
Thank you. Your deletion request has reached our data protection team. We confirm that it is you, then delete your account and personal data, and we reply within one month.
2.What we delete
These items are removed when your account is closed.
| Data | What happens |
|---|---|
| Account and profile | Name, mobile number, email address, password, profile photo and verification status. Deleted when we close your account. |
| Trusted circle | The names and mobile numbers of the people you added, and your own connections to other circles. Removed with your account. |
| Followed and saved places | The places you follow or save, with the names you gave them. Removed with your account. |
| Location history | Removed with your account, and in any case never kept longer than the period your plan provides, being 7, 30, 90 or 180 days. |
| Photographs and video | Kept while your account is open, and deleted when we close your account, unless we must hold an item for a moderation or legal matter. |
| Alerts and journeys | Panic alerts, check-ins and Trip Watch records are deleted when we close your account. |
| WhatsApp message records | The record of messages exchanged, which holds no message text, is deleted after twelve months. The private words you set for a panic alert on WhatsApp are deleted when the account is closed. |
| Device and usage data | Notification token, device details and usage records linked to your account are removed with it. |
3.What we keep, and for how long
Some data stays after your account is closed, for the reasons set out below.
| Data | Why and for how long |
|---|---|
| Billing records | Plan, billing history and payment reference. Kept for six years, to meet tax and accounting obligations. We never hold your card details. |
| Reports you submitted | A report forms part of the safety record that other people rely on. When we close your account it is de-identified from you, so it no longer shows who made it, and it stays on the map record. |
| Records we must keep by law | If a law, a court order or a regulator requires us to hold data, we keep it for the required period and no longer. |
| Aggregate safety information | Counts and patterns by area, hour and season. It has no names, numbers or identifiers, so it does not contain personal data and is kept. |
The full retention schedule is in section 9 of our Privacy Policy.
4.Other requests about your data
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you can also ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, object to how we use it, or withdraw consent. Use the same email address, and tell us what you need.
If you are not happy with our response, you may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. We would rather hear from you first, and we will try to put the matter right.
